graph-studio
Agentic Skills
By default, Graph Studio uses skills-only mode — the AI assistant sees a single compact skills catalog tool (general_skills_catalog) and discovers specific tools on demand. All registered tools are available through the catalog but are not listed individually until the AI requests them. This provides 80–90% fewer tokens per request compared to exposing all tool definitions upfront.
How the AI Uses Skills
- List skills — The AI sees skill names and one-line summaries (~300 tokens)
- Resolve a skill — Expands a skill to see its tools, sub-skills, and shared context (~500 tokens)
- Resolve a tool — Gets the full tool definition with parameter schema (~800 tokens)
- Resolve a type — Gets the full schema for a polymorphic subtype (when a tool's
typefield has an enum of subtypes) - Call the tool — Invokes the tool with the correct parameters
The AI only loads what it needs, when it needs it. You describe what you want in natural language and the assistant discovers the appropriate skill(s) and tool(s) automatically.
Sub-Skills
Skills can contain sub-skills — child skills that group tools into finer categories within a parent skill. When the AI resolves a parent skill, it sees both direct tool references and a list of sub-skills it can drill into further.
Sub-skills support hierarchical organization:
- A parent skill can have both direct tools and sub-skill references
- When resolved, the parent shows sub-skill names with
[N tools]counts - The AI resolves a sub-skill using the same
resolve_skillaction with the sub-skill's ID - Sub-skills carry their own shared context and tool references
A skill marked as sub-skill only (isSubSkillOnly = true) is hidden from the top-level catalog listing and only appears when its parent skill is resolved. This keeps the top-level catalog compact while allowing deep hierarchy.
Example: A parent skill "Data Management" could have sub-skills for "File Staging", "Migration", and "Versioning". The AI sees the parent in the catalog, resolves it to discover the sub-skills, then resolves the specific sub-skill it needs.
Default Skills
The following skills are included out of the box. Administrators can add, edit, and remove skills at any time through the admin panel — these are the defaults, not a fixed set.

save |
Save & Ontology Management | Create, update, and delete ontologies and graph data via the transactional save service. Browse and query ontology registries | 9 |
ontology_design |
Ontology Design Guidance | Graph Studio ontology compliance best practices. Use when designing, reviewing, or generating OWL ontologies for Graph Studio Before designing a target ontology, always resolve the discovery skill to analyze source data and inform modeling decisions. | 2 |
discovery |
Data Discovery | Explore registered ontologies, classes, and properties. Get live graphmart analytics or pre-computed profiling metrics. Use when asked to analyze, explore, profile, summarize, inspect, or understand data. | 3 sub-skills |
discovery_schema |
Ontology Schema Discovery (sub-skill) | Explore registered ontologies, classes, datatype properties, and object properties from the Ontology registry — no graphmart needed. | 4 |

skills_management |
Skills Catalog Management | Create, modify, delete, and inspect skills and their tool references in the Agentic Skills Catalog. Use when the user asks to 'create a skill', 'add a skill', 'modify a skill', 'delete a skill', 'list skills', or otherwise manage skills and their tool references. This is the preferred way to manage skills — do not create local SKILL.md files unless explicitly requested. | 15 |
acls |
Access Control Management | Retrieve, modify, replace, and reset access control lists (ACLs) on graphs and resources. Use when the user asks to 'set permissions', 'manage ACLs', 'grant access', 'revoke access', 'check permissions', 'reset ACLs', or otherwise work with access control. | 4 |
Tools not assigned to a skill are automatically grouped by their name prefix into dynamic skill buckets:
| Prefix | Dynamic Skill ID | Name |
|---|---|---|
service_* |
services_other |
Other Semantic Services |
rest_* |
rest_other |
Other REST APIs |
general_* |
general_other |
Other Generic Tools |

Uncategorized Tools |
Dynamic skills only appear when matching tools are registered. The set of available tools depends on which services are registered at runtime. In SKILLS_CURATED mode, dynamic auto-grouping is disabled — only explicitly-defined skills appear.
